A tale from ancient history, compiled from the writings of a Greek poet and her friend. But in “The House of the Muses,” you\'ll read it through the modern media we know as the Graphic Novel. And the poet is Sappho, so it\'s no surprise that passion is as omnipresent as the power politics of slave ownership and family intrigues. House of the Muses: The Latter Days of Sappho of Lesbos introduces us to Mnasidika of Sparta, a girl with a stolen destiny, and how she made her journey to Lesbos. At the end of her adventures, she would write the one poem that the legendary Poetess of Mytilene would safeguard among her treasured works forever.

In this issue: The Sappho Saga continues. The highborn children of Kleis are grown and involved in lives of their own: Charaxos, now a fledgling merchant, outrages his sister when he announces that he has bought and married a prostitute.

Larichos, a winebearer for the House of Penthilos, also known as the House of Many Kings, tries with their little brother Eurygios to counsel Sappho not to be so hard on their brother.

Unbeknownst to all her family, Sappho is already deeply embroiled with Alkaios and his friends in a political plot that will soon lead to her arrest and exile from Mytilene.

In present time an unexpected guest makes a visit to the House of the Muses. Gorgo of the House of Penthilos tells Sappho that she has opened a school for girls of her own in the city of Mytilene, with Andromeda, the daughter of Pittakos, as headmistress. Sappho tries not to appear upset by the news and it seems to anger Gorgo. The woman tells Sappho to remember that her reputation is fragile, and how interesting would it be if the people of Mytilene were reminded of her part in the assassination of the tyrant Myrsilos so many years ago.

Sappho orders Gorgo to leave, but the damage has already been done.

Immortal Lovers

In this issue: Dika’s transition into Sappho’s school runs smoothly at first, but the bookish Spartan girl doesn’t manage very well at Gymnasium. She is teamed up with the athletic Hero of Gyaros. It soon becomes known that Hero has much more than a passing interest in Dika.

When Dika’s nightmares worsen, Sappho and Isthia plan a day trip to Ephesus where they beg a consultation with the Priestesses of Kybele.

A gifted priestess at the temple takes Dika to herself for the day and helps the Spartan girl come to terms with her abilities and who she really is.

Author’s note: Many, many thanks to Laura Seabrook, whose intensive research on the Priestesses of Kybele greatly enriched this issue of House of the Muses.
