| Animal City is a satire of the novel Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett, and it’s also a satire of the USA. This story has it all. Cops, Crooks and Workers, the Rich and the Destitute…it’s a caricature of the country I call home. Like any good satire a person has to have a deep love of the thing they are making fun of. I am in love with what America could be. The things in this book are things I enjoyed a lot when I was younger, and now I have the good sense to poke a little fun at those things. Yojimbo, The Last Man Standing, A Fistful of Dollars all share a common ancestor, Red Harvest. The lone gunman who plays all sides of a conflict is such a stupid idea, and at the same time so much fun I can’t help myself…I want to tell this story and I have to lambast it at the same time. |
