Following a freak incident involving the onstage immolation of burlesque queen Scarlett O' Herring, the disreputable reporters uncover a series of grisly, yet delightfully entertaining murders on the vaudeville circuit. Fleeing the murderer, debt collectors, and their editor, Johnny and Elizabeth follow an underground of opera-singing strongmen, slumming royalty, fake Chinese mystics, and philandering politicians. Set in Gilded Age New York and rendered in Molly Crabapple's signature style, "Backstage" is a comic romp through sex, drugs, and murder."
